I suppose that it has a lot to do with modern advertising, the touting claims of the benefits of whole grains on brightly-colored boxes of cereal and heart healthy labels affixed to encourage you to buy them.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\"><strong>This post, however, is not about cereal and bread. Instead, this post is about whole grains, the seeds of grasses or pseudocereal seeds, cultivated and used for food.<\/strong><br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\">Seeds of grasses. Yep. I&#8217;m all about eating grass seed, especially if it looks like popcorn, brown rice, oats and spelt. The endosperm is that fluff filling that whole grains have, and it is also what refined grains like all-purpose flour are made out of. Finally, the bran is the outer layer that serves to protect the seed, which is also high in nutrients, vitamins and just pleasant goodness.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/crankymouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/eatwellspendless_banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"eatwellspendless_banner\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crankymouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/eatwellspendless_banner.jpg 400w, https:\/\/crankymouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/eatwellspendless_banner-300x75.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><br \/>\nNow that I&#8217;ve bored you with the facts, let&#8217;s talk about the food part of whole grains. <strong>Grains are great to have around in case of emergency situations where access to a store may not be possible <\/strong>(snowmaggedon-style). It goes without saying that grains can also be soaked and cooked with the use of a camp stove, fire pit and with the help of a generator in the case of a power outage.<\/p>\n<h2><font color=\"darkcyan\">Whole Grain Storage<\/font><\/h2>\n<p>Whole grains don&#8217;t store as long as their refined counterparts, but <strong>if you&#8217;re careful about how and where you store them, you can successfully keep most fresh for 6 months to a year<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\">Store whole grains in clean, sealed glass jars in cool, dark locations. Some grains store well in the refrigerator or freezer, but generally speaking, a cool pantry location will suffice.  Most grains can be kept for up to a year if properly stored, but some like buckwheat and millet will not last as long in a pantry. Different grains can need anywhere from 12 to 60 minutes to cook, and that may also include overnight presoaking.
