\nIt’s Thanksgiving. Instead of running from Mankato to east of the cities, back to the center of it all, we sat at home getting ready to head to just one dinner hosted by my aunt and attended by the extended family on my mom’s side. I brought a pie, which was rather last minute. I was going to bring a cheesecake, but then I sat here and worked and the time squirreled itself away until a pie was the only option. I’ll tell you all about the apple and cranberry cardamom crisp concoction soon.

It’s nice to be here, as I told you yesterday<\/a>. A here that is full of family and friends and void of scrubs and stethoscopes, well, if you excuse my mom and my dad’s sister (RN and MD respectively). If you follow me on Twitter<\/a> or Facebook<\/a>, you may have seen the updates about Kjell, our trip to the ER via ambulance, admittance to the PICU and discharge. To all of you, I say thank you. Your kind thoughts and messages and actions were so touching and meaningful as we made our way through this time with our family. We are humbled by the outpouring of love and kindness.

I wanted to give you a brief update on where we are in our journey towards health and healing. Kjell has episodes where he gets dizzy, loses his balance and his vision in both eyes, becomes less and less responsive and eventually becomes unconscious after some seizure-like activity. This time that was also accompanied by his body temperature and respirations dropping suddenly and not responding to stimuli in the emergency room, which led to him being sedated and intubated. CT scans, lumbar punctures, EEGs and x-rays were all part of the drill, one we’d seen before just this past summer, and he will soon also have an MRI and an MRA to look for brain stem and neurological issues.

We’re far from knowing what it could possibly be, and with some doctors feeling differently than others and our pediatrician watching out for him, we’re praying that the radiologists, neurologists and specialists that will be reading the scans will find the problems that are causing these things to happen so they can develop a plan to either prevent or treat before the episodes become as scary as we’ve seen them get.

We have a long road ahead of us, and so today, Thanksgiving Day, thank you for being there, for caring in whatever way you might. We hope your Thanksgiving was full of warm hugs, bountiful food and as much love as we have felt in the past 5 days.
