Rather than Christmas carols, Clark Griswold is in the background stringing lights and crunching through the snow with his kids from a small laptop screen on the center of the table. Every surface in the kitchen has been overtaken by a collection of baking items. Tins in various stages of packing are set out on the table. Jam jars line the counter. Stacks of cookie sheets teeter on the edge of the stovetop. Cooling racks hold rows of cookies, and a sieve with powdered sugar rests in a bowl off to the side. The mixer spins, whirring along.

Years ago my sister and I undertook the tradition of baking cookies as my grandma did for Christmas Eve dinner. Rolling and shaping dough, filling it with preserves and nuts, dusting lightly with powdered sugar until we have enough to stack high on platters.

Peanut butter balls are something we usually include by request. My sister-in-law looks for them when I arrive at the in-laws’. My mom’s sister gets a small tin filled for her. My kids delight in seeing the shiny chocolate addition in the center of the otherwise white-dusted plate. They have become a family favorite whose presence is anticipated and expected. So without complaint, they are rolled and dipped and tucked inside tins with quaint winter scenes.
