Smoked Barbecue Ribs: The Movie

Ole · May 31, 2010 · 12 Comments

We invited our neighbors over for a “how to smoke barbecue ribs” session a while back. There’s nothing like a lazy afternoon with your neighbors, sitting in the backyard as the baby back ribs smoke in the background.

One of our favorite things about our neighborhood is the neighbors we share it with. We couldn’t have asked for more when we bought our house three and a half years ago. Whether it’s backyard barbecues or taking turns feeding everyone’s pets while they’re gone, it is definitely what makes us want to stay here indefinitely.

While cookouts and yard work can sometimes define Memorial Day, take a moment to remember all those who fell serving their country. What are you doing this Memorial Day?

The Rib Rub: You can purchase rib rub in the supermarket near the spices, or you can make your own rib rub blend. Adjust the chili powder and pepper levels to create your desired level of spice.

Smoked Barbecue Ribs

Print me!
2 racks of baby back ribs
1/2 cup rib rub
1/2 cup bbq sauce (optional)

Rinse the ribs and remove the membrane.

Rub the ribs liberally with the rub mixture of your choice.

Place in racks (if you have them) and smoke in a 220 degree smoker for 4 hours or until the meat shrinks back from the bone ends by about 1/2 inch.

At this point you can either eat them (naked), apply some more rub and serve (like some famous Memphis rib joints), refrigerate or freeze them for later, or finish them with a sauce on the grill (Kansas City style).

oh MAN do those look delicious. I do love me some ribs! I don’t have a smoker so we’ve never tried making them this way. I think I will have to remedy that this summer!!

We bought a smoker a couple of months ago and the first thing we smoked was ribs. They were excellent. We have done, chicken and sausages. We are going to have family bbq and smoke a 14 pound turkey. I can’t wait. Have a great day!

Wow! We loved the video. However, we tried this with tofu ribs (i.e., Tribfu) and didn’t quite get the same results. Also, instead of using wood, we smoked some grass clippings and part of an old mattress… maybe not the best idea??

As they say, there is no substitute… for Ole.

Seriously, though, do you have a recipe for a good rib rub?

    Thanks!
