The Monday Menu: September 21, 2009

We headed off to the farmer’s market today again. I came back with produce for the whole week, including apples. I love fall at the farmer’s market. Most of the produce in Minnesota is harvested in the fall, and the bustle and bushels and baskets of peppers, corn, tomatoes and onions make it that much more enjoyably…for me, at least.

We came home with a fantastic bushel of early apples, perfect for eating and eating and eating some more. A few more weeks until peak apple season hits and the apple desserts can begin. I have several bookmarked and dogeared to try the minute they get here. In the meantime, I’ll be eating these tiny apples with the kids.

Monday – Lemon chicken pasta salad (Ole teaches after work on Monday, and this is SO easy to make ahead and have ready) with spring mix greens, grapes

Tuesday – Turkey Milanese, roasted tomatoes and cipollini from Smitten Kitchen (Congrats on the little guy, Deb!), steamed rice

Wednesday – Sicilian Sfincione, similar to a Neapolitan pizza

Thursday – Sweet and sour chicken, Ahi tuna potstickers

Friday – Bacon-wrapped Filet Mignon, cheesy rice, steamed green beans

Recipes to look for here at Food for My Family this week: Last week’s gâteau started a string of baking inspired by my grandma and her cookbook. Right now there is a Zwetschgenkuchen – or plum cake – cooling, fresh from the oven. I’ll share that and make good on the barbecue rib video. Editing is taking a bit longer than I anticipated, but it’s on its way.

Your whole week sounds delicious! Do you make the tuna potstickers from scratch, or are those purchased? I love potstickers, they could be my main dish, not just a side 😉 but have never been brave enough to try cooking them at home!

I’d love to see what you plan on making with the apples! We just picked 30 lbs of apples here in Texas and while I’ve already made apple butter I don’t know what else to do with them!

the Lemon Chicken pasta salad sounds great! Is this a recipe you have on the website (or would be willing to pass along 😀 )I make a side dish pasta salad with tuna fish and my husband loves it so I know this would be a big hit with my family.

Megan, we’ll be making apple crisp, of course, and then I have an apple crumb cake I want to try, apple dumplings, an apple bread pudding and apple cake..and about four others that I’m considering I don’t know that I’ll get to all of them, but the crumb cake and the crisp are definitely going to happen. Then I just need to narrow it down and figure out how much time I have and what makes the most sense.

Adrianne, I didn’t take pictures of the “making of” the pasta salad, but I’ll happily pass the recipe along.

Everything sounds amazing! I love the farmers market too, we do a big garden but I get a lot of my fresh fruits from there. Have fun with your apple cooking! 🙂

We are going apple picking soon (maybe next Sunday if the weather holds) and I’m so looking forward to apple crisp and baked apples! Your photo of the apple just makes me want to start baking — or at least nibbling 🙂

Omigosh your food sounds so yummy!

Your pictures are incredible! What kind of camera do you use? Although, I think it’s largely due to your skill!

Recipe is all I need, pictures are a nice luxury. Although if you managed a shot of the final product that would be great. Should I look for the recipe here at the website or via email? Thanks again 🙂
