Food for the Fourth

Shaina · July 2, 2009 · 1 Comment

It’s here. The 4th of July happens to mark my favorite point in the summer. My lilies are in full bloom, the hydrangeas just started, balloon flowers are popping. Outside of my garden, marshmallows are roasting, fireworks booming in the sky.

We start off our 4th of July at a potluck picnic in the park surrounded by family. We end with another potluck in a backyard with fire pits and lawn games and bomb pops, and then, when the time is right, we meander down the street to stake claim to a plot of grass on the hill overlooking our neighborhood fireworks display. The evening ends by the fire pit with sparklers and s’mores, followed by carrying our children off to bed.

Whether it’s for a potluck or just for the family out by the lake, food is what ties the day together. Here are a few ideas to get you started as you plan your menu.

You can’t go wrong with a cheese-filled hamburger. Pat your patties out ahead to make for an easy Jucy Lucy preparation the day of.

If you’re looking to leave behind the burgers and brats, try the Cedar Plank Salmon

You can’t forget a salad or two. This baked potato salad is a 4th favorite.

Asparagus_brush
Load your vegetables on the grill. Asparagus spears make wonderful finger foods.

monster-baked
Finish it off with a container or two full of monster cookies. Use red, white and blue M&Ms to celebrate the stars and stripes.

Keep in mind, you do need to actively pursue your goals! Thinking about something alone is unlikely to have an impact when it comes to getting what you want.
